Project OmniVelos

By HU MINDS INC.

The OmniVelos is a conversion device that transforms any regular bicycle into an electric bike, allowing the user to travel faster and farther, conquering difficult terrain.

THE INSPIRATION

I believe in increasing accessibility to biking and making it a viable form of transport in all countries. Access to public transportation is the most critical factor allowing families to escape poverty; in cities or towns where the government fails to provide adequate public transit, owning affordable, long-range personal transportation would be the next best option. Additionally, electric bikes help solve a host of environmental challenges, and daily exercise has marked social benefits by improving overall health: as long as they can be offered at an accessible price point, guarantee reliability and can be easily installed.

HOW IT WORKS

The OmniVelos is a simple yet intelligent device. It consists of a rotor, stator, control boards and battery. All components are made to snap or bolt right onto the universal parts of most bikes: a simple installation procedure. The stator has 6 copper coils while the rotor is a flat disk with 72 magnets. The battery is removable and can be charged easily at home or at work. An auxiliary USB port charges portable devices while the bike is being used. Two operational modes are possible. A thumb-operated or twist throttle allows the rider to have manual operation. A smart auto mode provides seamless assistance, using acceleration readings from the driven wheel, as well as a gyroscope/accelerometer pairings mounted on a rigid portion of the bicycle. Our algorithms learn the riding circumstances and user habits for maximum efficiency and range.

HOW IT IS DIFFERENT

Perhaps the most notable difference in the way the OmniVelos functions as opposed to other conversion kits is the type of motor used. The OmniVelos uses a linear motor mounted directly on face of a bicycle wheel. This differs from the standard designs currently available for these types of conversion kits which use hub motors. Competing products with hub motors require wheel replacement, and add rotational mass, which negative impacts the bike’s handling. With our device, a user may keep all of their current bike components, with no modifications. The ring and stator for this electric bike are mounted on the wheel and frame respectively, ensuring a balanced weight distribution and minimum added rotational inertia. Another advantage is that a user can also easily take off our device if they want to just bike without it, or simply transfer the device to other bikes. The device is compactly packaged for cheap and easy shipping, but is still easy to install.
